MStar Semiconductor Inc. fell to a record low in Taipei trading on speculation rival chip designer MediaTek Inc. (2454) may expand its digital television business, “threatening” MStar, said Vickie Hsieh, an analyst at President Securities Corp.
MStar slumped 5 percent to NT$182, while MediaTek dropped 1.6 percent to NT$299. MStar Chief Financial Officer Han-Fei Lin and MediaTek CFO David Ku weren’t immediately available for comment at their offices.
MediaTek Chairman Tsai Ming-Chieh said the company is optimistic about the outlook for digital television technology, the United Daily News reported today.
