Athletics Fire Geren as Manager Amid Nine-Game Losing Streak, Name Melvin

Bob Geren was fired today as manager of the Oakland Athletics, who have lost nine games in a row and fallen into last place in the American League West.

Bob Melvin, a broadcaster and former manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, was appointed to fill the job for the rest of this season by General Manager Billy Beane.

Geren, 49, had a 334-376 record since taking over as the A’s manager in November 2006. Oakland is 27-36 this season.

The changes were announced by the Major League Baseball team in a news release.
