Germany Beats Azerbaijan, Stays Perfect in Euro 2012 Qualifying

Germany defeated Azerbaijan 3-1 to remain perfect in qualifying for soccer’s 2012 European Championship.

Mesut Ozil, Mario Gomez and Andre Schurrle scored for Germany, which won its seventh straight qualifier. The victory in Baku, Azerbaijan, guarantees that Germany will finish as one of the top two teams in Group A.

The winner of the nine groups, along with the second-place team with the most points, qualify for Euro 2012 with hosts Poland and Ukraine. The remaining eight second-place teams will play off for the final four spots.

Germany leads Group A with 21 points, 10 more than Belgium with three games left for both. Third-place Turkey is 11 points behind Germany with four matches remaining.

Sergei Kornilenko and Anton Putilo scored as Belarus beat Luxembourg 2-0 in Group D to move within a point of first-place France, which has played one fewer game. Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Albania 2-0 to move into third place, two points behind Belarus.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s hat trick helped Sweden to a 5-0 win over neighbor Finland. The victory takes the Swedes within three points of the Netherlands at the top of Group E. Hungary stayed three points behind the Swedes by beating San Marino 3-0.

Frodi Benjaminsen and Arnbjorn Hansen scored as last-place Faroe Islands beat Estonia 2-0 for its first win in Group C.
