Omanis Burn Government Building, Stage Strikes, Gulf News Says
Omani demonstrators seeking better pay and political representation set a government building on fire today in the northern city of Ibri, Gulf News reported.
Another demonstration was organized in the coastal city of Sohar, north of the capital Muscat, laying siege to the port and preventing trucks and commercial vehicles from entering or leaving, the Dubai-based newspaper reported, citing witnesses.
In Muscat, staff at the Oman International Bank SAOG (OIBB), the Muscat Inter-Continental Hotel, the Al Bustan Palace Hotel and the municipality went on strike over the past 48 hours, demanding promotions and the appointment of Omanis at senior positions held now by foreigners, Gulf News said.
