Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, wounded last month in a shooting spree outside a Tucson supermarket, is speaking “more and more” and requested toast for breakfast, her spokesman said today.

“Congresswoman Giffords is improving in all areas,” the spokesman, C.J. Karamargin, said in a telephone interview. “She has vigorous therapy every day, including speech therapy. It is paying off.” Her appetite has returned as well, her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, posted on the lawmaker’s Facebook page. She is eating three meals a day of hospital food.

“The doctors say she is recovering at lightning speed considering her injury but they aren’t kidding when they say this is a marathon process,” Kelly wrote.

Giffords, 40, is undergoing therapy in a hospital in Houston after being shot in the head during the Jan. 8 Tucson attack. Jared Loughner, 22, has been charged in the shootings, which killed 6 people and injured 13, including Democrat Giffords.

Her progress is a combination of the Houston hospital’s resources and the congresswoman’s “grit and determination,” Karamargin said.

The U.S. House of Representatives today cleared legislation to name a federal courthouse under construction in Yuma, Arizona, after U.S. District Judge John Roll, one of the six people killed. The bill earlier passed the Senate.
