Abil, Harmony Gold, Anglo Platinum May Move: South Africa Stocks Preview

The following is a list of companies whose shares may have unusual price changes in South Africa. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names and prices are from the last close.

South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index traded at its highest level since May 2008, rising 107.68, or 0.3 percent, to 32,902.52.

AECI Ltd. (AFE SJ): Africa’s largest explosives maker said full-year earnings per share excluding one-items rose between 50 percent and 70 percent, beating an earlier forecast for an increase of at least 40 percent. AECI advanced 40 cents, or 0.5 percent, to 81.90 rand.

African Bank Investments Ltd. (ABL SJ): The financial- services company said combined sales for the lender and Ellerine Holdings Ltd. increased by 59 percent to 5.5 billion rand ($760 million) in the quarter ended Dec. 31. Abil, as it’s known, fell 1.6 percent to 37.85 rand.

Anglo Platinum Ltd. (AMS SJ): The world’s biggest producer of the metal will report its full-year earnings. Anglo Platinum declined 1.99 rand, or 0.3 percent, to 728.01 rand.

Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HAR SJ): Africa’s third-biggest producer of the metal said second-quarter operating profit increased 33 percent to 867 million rand. Harmony gained 2.80 rand, or 3.6 percent, to 79.80 rand.

Hosken Consolidated Investments Ltd. (HCI SJ): The investment company may buy a 34.9 percent stake in KWV Holdings Ltd. for 11.80 rand a share, less than an aborted 12 rand a share offer from Pioneer Foods Ltd. (PFG SJ), Business Report said, without saying where it got the information. HCI fell 1.97 rand, or 2.5 percent, to 78.02 rand. Pioneer increased 50 cents, or 0.9 percent, to 54 rand.

Trans Hex Group Ltd. (TSX SJ): Africa’s biggest publicly traded diamond producer said it produced 25,537 carats in the four months through January. The shares increased 7 cents, or 3.1 percent, to 2.32 rand.

Shares or American depositary receipts of the following South African companies closed as follows:

Anglo American Plc (AAUK US) rose 1.8 percent to $26.70. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU US) fell 1.5 percent to $44.73. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BBL US) slipped 0.7 percent to $81.27. DRDGold Ltd. (DROOY US) added 1.3 percent to $4.67. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI US) declined 0.9 percent to $16.15. Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY US) slid 0.3 percent to $10.88. Impala Platinum Holdings (IMPUY US) gained 0.2 percent to $29.40. Sappi Ltd. (SPP US) climbed 2.1 percent to $5.35. Sasol Ltd. (SSL US) added 5.6 percent to $52.32.
