The export-verification program for sales to Egypt is no longer required, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said today in a statement on its website.
“All BSE-related restrictions on beef have been lifted and therefore EV program requirements for Egypt have been removed,” Neil Gaffney, a USDA spokesman, said in a e-mail.
Details on the restrictions weren’t immediately available. Egypt still was the eight-largest buyer of U.S. beef in 2009, according to the USDA.
The first U.S. case of mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, was disclosed in late 2003. In March 2005, Egypt resumed purchase of U.S. beef and beef products from cattle less than 30 months of age.
