Blackpool Fined by Premier League for Fielding Weakened Team in Match

English soccer’s Premier League fined Blackpool 25,000 pounds ($40,000) for fielding a weakened team in its 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa in November.

Blackpool, which is playing its first season in the league, lost to a late goal by James Collins. Blackpool manager Ian Holloway made 10 changes from the team that played the previous game, a 2-2 draw with Everton.

League rules require that “each participating club shall field a full strength team” and that clubs behave toward each other and the competition with “the utmost good faith.”

The league said in a statement it based its decision on the teams fielded by the Tangerines in subsequent matches.

Blackpool, a relegation favorite before the season, is 12th in the 20-team league after 23 games.
