Independent’s S. African Unit Shuts Presses, Cuts Jobs, IOL Says
Independent News & Media Plc’s South African unit will cut jobs after shutting down the presses that printed two of the country’s oldest newspapers, Independent Online reported, citing Ishmet Davidson, general manager of Independent Newspapers Cape.
The company will contract the printing of its Cape Times and Cape Argus newspapers to Cape and Transvaal Printers Ltd. from April, the Johannesburg-based website said. The presses, installed during the 1980s, had become outdated, causing Independent to lose a contract to print Avusa Ltd.’s Business Day and Sunday Times newspapers because of poor quality printing, Davidson was quoted as saying.
The closure of the presses means 92 people will lose their jobs, it said, adding that of these, 37 people will join Cape and Transvaal Printers,
