Eisai, JGC, Nidec, Softbank, Yahoo Japan: Japan Equity Preview

The following companies may have unusual price changes in Japanese trading today. Stock symbols are in parentheses, and share prices are as of the latest close. The information in each item was released after markets shut unless stated otherwise.

Eisai Co. (4523 JT): The pharmaceutical company said its experimental drug to treat severe sepsis failed to save more lives than a placebo in a final-stage study. The company also said it plans to seek regulatory approval in the U.S. and EU for its experimental drug perampanel in the quarter starting April 1. The stock climbed 0.2 percent to 2,954 yen.

Fujitsu General Ltd. (6755 JT): The maker of air- conditioning units said nine-month net income jumped 46 percent to 2.87 billion yen ($35 million). The shares advanced 5 percent to 525 yen.

Hitachi High-Technologies Corp. (8036 JT): The trading company said net income for the nine months ended Dec. 31 was 13.3 billion yen, compared with a loss of 5.6 billion yen a year earlier. The stock gained 2.1 percent to 2,082 yen.

JGC Corp. (1963 JT): The plant-engineering company said it received a $1.7 billion order to build facilities for the Donggi-Senoro liquefied-natural-gas project in Indonesia. The shares increased 1.8 percent to 2,072 yen.

Koa Corp. (6999 JT): The electronic-parts maker posted net income of 2.1 billion yen, compared with 405 million yen a year earlier. Sales jumped 27 percent in the same period to 33 billion yen. The stock gained 3 percent to 1,012 yen.

Komatsu Ltd. (6301 JT): The company may post an operating profit of 220 billion yen ($2.7 billion) for the year through March 31, 3.3 times the year before, the Nikkei newspaper reported, without saying where it obtained the information. The stock increased 1.8 percent to 2,426 yen.

Maruha Nichiro Holdings Inc. (1334 JT): The seafood company may say its April-December operating profit rose 50 percent on the year to 16.5 billion yen, the Nikkei newspaper reported, without saying where it obtained the information. The shares climbed 0.7 percent to 141 yen.

NEC Corp. (6701 JT): The maker of personal computers and Lenovo Group Inc. agreed in principle to form a personal- computer joint venture, Nikkei English News said, without citing a source for the information. The shares jumped 3.4 percent to 246 yen.

Nidec Corp. (6594 JO): The world’s biggest maker of motors for hard-disk drives said nine-month net income rose 36 percent to 40.8 billion yen from a year earlier. The shares advanced 1.9 percent to 8,100 yen.

Shimizu Corp. (1803 JT): The construction company plans to sell 10 billion yen in bonds as early as next month to pay back debt, the Nikkei newspaper reported, without saying where it obtained the information. The stock increased 0.8 percent to 366 yen.

Softbank Corp. (9984 JT): The mobile network operator said it paid 120 billion yen to Yahoo Japan Corp. (4689 JT) for preferred shares and stock acquisition rights of Softbank subsidiary BB Mobile Corp.

Also, Yahoo Japan said net income for the 9-month quarter was 67.8 billion yen, an increase of 13 percent on the previous year. Softbank shares gained 1.9 percent to 2,803 yen. Yahoo Japan climbed 2.1 percent to 31,950 yen.

Yamato Holdings Co. (9064 JT): The provider of door-to-door parcel delivery services may say its October-December operating profit rose 7 percent on the year to 42 billion yen, the Nikkei newspaper reported, without saying where it obtained the information. The Japanese trucking company may post sales of 372 billion yen, an increase of 9 percent, the report said. The stock increased 1.5 percent to 1,248 yen.
