Micheal Martin, Ireland’s former foreign minister, is the frontrunner to become leader of the country’s ruling Fianna Fail party, the Sunday Times reported.
Martin has taken an early lead in the race after more than 12 lawmakers declared support for him, the newspaper said. Prime Minister Brian Cowen resigned as party leader yesterday, while remaining head of the government.
Finance Minister Brian Lenihan, Social Protection Minister Eamon O’Cuiv and Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin all said yesterday they will also contest the leadership vote set for Jan. 26.
