Toulon confirmed its place in the quarterfinals of European rugby’s Heineken Cup today with a 32- 16 victory over Munster, which cannot now advance. There were also wins for London Irish and Glasgow.
Jonny Wilkinson kicked 22 points for Toulon, which leads Pool 3 with 17 points, while two-time champion Munster has 11. London Irish defeated Ospreys 24-12, leaving the teams on 9 and 10 points, respectively.
Glasgow’s Ruaridh Jackson kicked 15 points in the 20-10 win over London Wasps, who now trail Pool 6 leader and defending champion Toulouse by six points in second place. Toulouse made it five straight wins with a 17-3 win over Newport-Gwent yesterday and is assured of progressing.
Wasps have to win their final game, against Toulouse, to have any hope of going through.
Yesterday, Leinster claimed a quarterfinal place, beating Saracens 43-20 in Pool 2. Ulster edged Biarritz 9-6 in Pool 4 and Bath beat Aironi 55-16. Perpignan routed Treviso 44-9 in Pool 5, while Leicester Tigers defeated Scarlets 32-18. Northampton Saints became the first team to advance two days ago with a 37-0 win over Edinburgh in Pool 1.
Northampton, Leinster, Toulon, Biarritz, Perpignan and Toulouse are the pool leaders, with one round of group games left.
The top team in each of the six pools, plus the best two second-place squads, advance to the quarterfinals.
