India’s Sugar Output Climbs 9% to 8.5 Million Tons, Group Says

India, the world’s second-biggest sugar producer, likely produced 8.5 million metric tons since the start of the season on Oct. 1, up 9 percent from the same period a year earlier, according to a producers’ group.

Output was 7.8 million tons in the same period a year ago, Vinay Kumar, managing director of the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd., said in a phone interview.

Total production may be 25 million tons in the 2010-2011 season, up from 18.9 million tons a year earlier, Kumar said, repeating an earlier forecast.
