Yankees to Host Detroit Tigers in Baseball's March 31 Opening Game on ESPN
The New York Yankees will host the Detroit Tigers on March 31 in the opening game of the 2011 Major League Baseball season, which begins on a Thursday for the first time in 35 years.
The Yankees and Tigers will meet at 1 p.m. New York time in the first of three opening-day games that will be televised by Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN network.
The St. Louis Cardinals host the San Diego Padres in the second game, which is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., and the World Series-champion San Francisco Giants visit the Los Angeles Dodgers at 8 p.m. It marks the sixth time in seven years that baseball’s defending champions will play the first nationally televised prime time game of the season.
There are three other major-league games scheduled for March 31, with the Washington Nationals hosting the Atlanta Braves, the Milwaukee Brewers playing at the Cincinnati Reds and the Kansas City Royals hosting the Anaheim Angels.
The last time a major-league season started on a Thursday was 1976. Major League Baseball is seeking to finish the regular season on Sept. 28 and complete the World Series earlier than in past years.
