Chevron Phillips Starts Maintenance at Texas Chemical Plant

Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. LLC began maintenance on an ethylene unit at its Cedar Bayou chemical plant in Baytown, Texas, according to a filing with state regulators.

Flaring associated with the work started today at 8 a.m. local time and is expected to last three days, the company said in a filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Chevron Phillips is based in The Woodlands, Texas.

Chemical plant outages can increase prices for products as companies turn to spot markets to help them meet supply contracts.

Linda Koenig, a company spokeswoman, couldn’t immediately be reached by telephone for comment.

The company is a joint venture of Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips. Ethylene crackers process natural gas liquids or naphtha into basic petrochemicals used in plastics.

The Cedar Bayou plant is 32 miles (51 kilometers) east of Houston.
