Syria’s Chief of Staff Visits Russia to Discuss Cooperation

Syrian Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant-General Daoud Rajha today begins a six-day visit to Russia to discuss military cooperation, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Rajha will meet his Russian counterpart Nikolai Makarov as well as top executives of the Rosoboronexport, the state weapons exports agency, the Moscow-based ministry said in an e-mailed statement. He will also visit a number of Russian defense companies and a training center of Russia’s missile forces, it said.

Russia will complete the delivery of anti-ship missiles to Syria this year and may sell more arms to the Arab nation after assessing the impact on the balance of power in the Middle East, Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said Sept. 22 in an interview. Syria and Israel have been officially in a state of war since the 1973 Arab-Israeli conflict.
