Brigham Young, Northern Illinois, Troy State Win as Football Bowls Begin

Brigham Young University, Northern Illinois University and Troy State University were winners as the college football bowl season opened.

Jake Heaps threw four touchdown passes yesterday, including scoring strikes of 31, 29 and three yards to Cody Hoffman, to lead BYU to a 52-24 win against the University of Texas-El Paso in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque.

At the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho, quarterback Chandler Harnish ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third as NIU defeated Fresno State University 40-17. Harnish threw for 300 yards and had 10 carries for 72 yards.

Troy defeated Ohio University 48-21 in the New Orleans Bowl. Corey Robinson threw four touchdown passes and hit for 387 yards for Troy, which led 38-7 at halftime. Boo Jackson had three scoring tosses for Ohio.
