Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace Flaunts $11 Million Christmas Tree
Abu Dhabi’s iconic Emirates Palace hotel is vying to be the home of the world’s most expensive Christmas tree by adorning it with jewelry at a cost of more than $11 million.
The tree has not been officially titled the most expensive by Guinness World Records and the Kempinski AG-managed hotel will ask the organization to certify the tree, General Manager Hans Olbertz said yesterday.
The tree, standing 13 meters (43 feet) high at the 302-room hotel, carries 181 pieces of diamond, pearl, emerald necklaces, bracelets, earrings and watches. The price tags of the ornaments range between 36,000 dirhams ($9,800) and 3.5 million dirhams.
Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates and home to about 8 percent of the world’s oil supply, set a record in June when Capital Gate, the tilting glass tower, was named the “World’s Furthest-Leaning Manmade Tower” by Guinness.
The Emirates Palace, which often hosts statesmen and celebrities from around the world, offered a $1 million Valentine’s Day package and has a gold bar vending machine this year.
