Ukraine processed 87 percent of its sugar-beet harvest and produced 1.49 million metric tons of the sweetener as of Dec. 3, a producers’ group said.
Another 223,587 tons of sugar was produced from imported sugar, Ukrtsukor, which represents the country’s sugar makers, said in an e-mailed statement today. The season started Sept. 1.
The country’s agriculture ministry cut on Nov. 15 its forecast for refined sugar production in the season from 2 million tons to 1.7 million tons. It was the second forecast reduction this year after dry weather in July and August.
The country’s economy ministry estimates domestic consumption of refined sugar at 1.8 million tons a year. Refined sugar stockpiles totaled 475,000 tons toward the end of August, former Deputy Agriculture Minister Yevhen Lavrov said Sept. 7.
Refiners processed 12.83 million tons of beets as of Dec. 3, Ukrtsukor said. The harvest, which is now completed, totaled 14.78 million tons.
