ECB’s Quaden Dismisses Cantona’s Call for Bank Run, RTBF Says

European Central Bank Governing Council member Guy Quaden isn’t concerned that former French soccer player Eric Cantona’s call for people to withdraw deposits today will lead to a run on the banking system, he told RTBF Radio in an interview.

“I’m not worried, and on the other hand I don’t wish for the collapse of the banking sector,” Quaden told the Belgian radio station. “Nobody should wish for that.”

Quaden said he understood the public animosity toward bankers, but he questioned who would win from a run on the banking system. “Surely not the mass of the population. I can’t imagine for a moment this scenario,” he said in the interview.
