South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index rose for a fourth day, gaining 279, or 0.9 percent, to 31,655.93 at the 5 p.m. close in Johannesburg.
The following were among the most active stocks in the South African market today.
Anglo American Plc. (AGL SJ), the diversified mining company that makes up 10 percent of South Africa’s benchmark stock index, advanced for a fourth day, adding 4.49 rand, or 1.4 percent, to 331.99 rand. The company said today it has completed the $707 million sale of its Skorpion zinc mine to Vedanta Resources Plc.
Hyprop Investments Ltd. (HYP SJ), a South African real-estate investor, increased 1.70 rand, or 3.1 percent, to 56 rand, snapping four days of losses. The company said it has reached an in principle agreement with the board of Femtowox Ltd. to buy 100 percent of Attfund Retail Ltd.’s property portfolio.
MTN Group Ltd. (MTN SJ), Africa’s largest mobile-phone company, increased for a fourth day, gaining 2.2 rand, or 1.7 percent, to 129.03 rand. MTN said it will sell as many as 1,876 transmission towers in Ghana to its joint venture with American Tower Corp., the U.S. antenna operator, for as much as $428.3 million.
Uranium One Inc. (UUU SJ), a producer of the fuel, fell 1.30 rand, or 3.3 percent, to 37.7 rand.
Village Main Reef Gold Mining Co. Ltd. (VIL SJ), a mining investment company, increased the highest since Nov. 26, jumping 10 cents, or 4.4 percent, to 2.40 rand. Village and Simmer & Jack Mines Ltd., a gold producer, said in a statement they have agreed to merge. Simmers increased for the third day in four, adding 2 cents, or 2 percent, to 1 rand.
Vodacom Group Ltd. (VOD SJ), South Africa’s largest mobile-network operator, rose for the fourth consecutive day, gaining 2.29 rand, or 3.2 percent, to 73.20 rand, the biggest jump since May 17. Morgan Stanley analysts Sean Gardiner and Madhvendra Singh raised Vodacom’s price estimate to 83 rand, from 76 rand, according to an e-mailed statement dated today.
