Merkel Made No Threat to Leave Euro; Spokesman Refutes Article

German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not threaten euro-region members with the possibility of the country exiting the common currency, according to an e-mailed statement by her spokesman, Steffen Seibert.

Seibert’s comment came after the Guardian newspaper on Dec. 3 reported Merkel warned Germany might abandon the euro.

“The Guardian’s report is not true, and Chancellor Merkel has never said these words put in her mouth,” Seibert said today. Germany unlimitedly stands by the euro, he said.
