Greek Stocks: Alpha Bank, Eurobank, Forthnet, NBG, Piraeus Bank

Greece’s benchmark ASE Index added 54.68, or 3.9 percent, to 1,474.35 at the 5:30 p.m. close in Athens, its biggest gain since Aug. 2.

The FTSE/ASE 20 Index of the country’s biggest companies gained 4.8 percent to 703.59. The Cypriot General Index rose 3 percent to 1,141.33.

The following shares were among the most active in Athens trading today. Symbols are in parentheses.

National Bank of Greece SA (ETE GA) gained 8.8 percent to 7.06 euros, its biggest gain since May 10. Greek banks surged amid speculation European Central Bank policy makers may step up measures to contain the region’s sovereign debt crisis. EFG Eurobank Ergasias SA (EUROB GA) added 11.5 percent to 4.28 euros. Alpha Bank AE (ALPHA GA) rose 9.6 percent to 4.68 euros. Piraeus Bank SA (TPEIR GA) added 9.1 percent to 3 euros.

Forthnet SA (FORTH GA) gained 9.5 percent to 46 cents, erasing a 2.3 percent loss the day before. Cyrte Investments, a legal entity related to board member Fransciscus Botman, acquired 14.5 million shares in Greece’s second-biggest web services provider, according to an Athens bourse filing.
