Markel CEO May Be Absent for Two Months for Treatment

Markel Corp., the Glen Allen, Virginia-based insurer, said Chief Executive Officer Alan Kirshner may be away from the company for most of December and January while undergoing medical treatment.

Kirshner should return to work in February, he said today in a statement distributed by PR Newswire. The statement didn’t give details on Kirshner’s medical treatment.

“For the next 60 days he’s going to be dealing with a procedure that will render him less accessible than he would otherwise be,” Bruce Kay, a spokesman for Markel, said in a telephone interview today. “It’s not emergency surgery.”
