Taiwan Stocks: Delta Electronics, Evergreen, Genius Electronic

Taiwan’s Taiex Index fell 37.84, or 0.5 percent, to 8,312.15 at the 1:30 p.m. close of trading in Taipei. The benchmark index advanced 0.1 percent this week, halting a two-week decline.

Delta Electronics Inc. (2308 TT) gained 2.6 percent to NT$136.50, posting its biggest gain since Oct. 25. DelSolar Co. (3599 TT) bought NT$506 million ($17 million) of equipment from Delta in the period from Dec. 17 to yesterday, the Hsinchu, Taiwan-based solar cell maker said in a statement to the stock exchange today. DelSolar was unchanged at NT$54.50.

Epistar Corp. (2448 TT) advanced 2.5 percent to NT$104.50, closing at the highest level since April 26. The light-emitting diode maker and Huga Optotech Inc. (8199 TT) decided to settle a patent infringement lawsuit, according to separate statements by the companies yesterday. Hsinchu, Taiwan-based Epistar in 2008 filed a suit against Huga Optotech for allegedly violating two patents, the company said in its statement. Huga increased 0.4 percent to NT$28.70.

Evergreen Marine Corp. (2603 TT) dropped 3.6 percent to NT$25.35. The island’s largest container-shipping line may report a loss next month on weak demand, the Economic Daily News reported today, citing people in the industry it didn’t name. Evergreen Executive Vice President Nieh Kuo-wei wasn’t immediately available for comments.

Genius Electronic Optical Co. (3406 TT) jumped 6.8 percent to NT$289.50, the highest since March 20, 2006, after the Economic Daily News said its October net income reached NT$141 million. Jones Chen, spokesman for the company, wasn’t immediately available for comment at his office. The report didn’t say where it got the information.
