Angola May Resume Sale of Oil Exploration Licenses Next Year
Angola may resume the sale of oil exploration licenses next year, said Deputy Oil Minister Anibal Octavio da Silva.
“The licensing for new blocks was suspended in 2008 because of elections,” da Silva told reporters today in the capital, Luanda. “We will see, if conditions are in place, to do it next year.”
Angola produces 1.9 million barrels of oil a day, second only to Nigeria in sub-Saharan Africa. Chevron Corp., the second-largest oil company, told reporters at the opening of its new headquarters that it is interested in bidding for new licenses. The company currently produces almost 580,000 barrels a day and will keep that output next year, Lusaka-based Expansao reported in July, citing Managing Director Alan Kleier.
