Rwanda Returns Two Mountain Gorillas to Congo After Six Years
Rwanda returned two mountain gorillas, one of the world’s most endangered primates, to the Democratic Republic of Congo, six years after they were taken from poachers as they cross over from the neighboring country.
Rwanda, which took the gorillas in December 2004, had agreed to return them once an appropriate sanctuary was established, according to a statement e-mailed by the Kigali- based Rwanda Development Board.
Gorillas are the leading attraction in Rwanda’s tourism industry, which will generate $187 million this year, according to the Board. There are 680 gorillas living in mountains bordering Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
