Hungary Ruling Party Backs Fiscal Council Cut, Index Reports

Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party supports a proposal to eliminate 99 percent of the budget of the Fiscal Council, the country’s independent budget watchdog, Index reported, citing Fidesz lawmaker Antal Rogan.

A Fidesz lawmaker introduced legislation to cut the council’s budget to 10 million forint ($49,000) from 835 million forint, Rogan said, according to the Budapest-based news portal.

Passage of the measure would mean that the Fiscal Council’s three-person leadership wouldn’t be able to keep experts who prepare background studies and forecasts on bills affecting the budget, Index said.
