First Solar May Use Cadmium in Panels Sold in EU, Wiwo Reports
First Solar Inc., a solar power module maker, may continue to use cadmium in products sold in the European Union, Wirtschaftswoche magazine said, citing a decision to be made by European lawmakers on Nov. 23.
A majority of lawmakers in the European Parliament will vote to exempt solar panel makers from rules governing the use of hazardous substances in electrical goods, the magazine said, without saying where it got the information. EU member states will approve the vote, the magazine said.
Panels made by U.S. company First Solar, the world’s largest maker of thin-film solar power modules, are based on cadmium tellurite.
