Haiti Protests Obstruct Cholera Patients From Care, WHO Says
Haitian protests over suspicion that U.N. soldiers inadvertently introduced a deadly cholera epidemic are blocking access to medical care facilities, a branch of the World Health Organization said.
“Every hour that the efforts of medical and relief workers are obstructed means more deaths of Haitians from cholera,” Dr. Mirta Roses, director of the Pan American Health Organization, said in an e-mailed statement.
Violent protests spread into the capital Port-au-Prince after three days of riots in the northern city of Cap-Haitien.
The protests were set off by claims that a U.N. camp housing Nepalese U.N. soldiers was the source of the cholera outbreak that has killed 1,110 and hospitalized 18,382.
