Robin Soderling Defeats Gael Monfils to Win First Masters Tennis Title
Soderling, who claimed his first Masters title and a check for 450,000 euros ($620,000), won 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) against Monfils, who lost to Novak Djokovic of Serbia in last year’s final.
He broke Monfils in the fourth and sixth games of the first set, although the second set was much closer until a one-sided tie-break.
The Swede, who had to save three match points against Frenchman Michael Llodra in the semifinals yesterday, now has six ATP Tour titles.
