Google Says It’s Not Building Social Site to Rival Facebook

Google Inc. said it has no plans to develop a social-networking platform to compete with Facebook Inc., and will instead focus on creating social applications.

“We think of social as an ingredient rather than a platform,” Hugo Barra, head of mobile product management, said at a media conference in Monaco today. Google isn’t working on a “traditional” social media platform, he said.

Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt said in September that the company would add a layer of social- networking features to its main products, prompting speculation it planned to challenge Facebook.

Barra stressed that anything Google creates in this field would focus on “personalization” as well as search and advertising.
