"Mainland China’s economic development has impressed the world, if it can make progress and breakthroughs in human rights this would be in line with the goal of a peaceful rise, and win recognition from Taiwanese people and the international community," Ma said in a statement posted on the presidential website today.
"Not only is it a great personal honor for Liu Xiaobo, in terms of mainland China’s human rights development, it’s of historic importance to the global Chinese community," the statement said.
