London Cab Driver Wins 2010 Bloomberg Fantasy Baseball Challenge 43-year-old Paul Farrell Fends off Houston Mom and Fantasy Experts using Bloomberg tools to outdistance some of fantasy’s best names in season long contest Business Wire NEW YORK -- October 04, 2010 Paul Farrell, a 43-year-old first-time fantasy baseball player born and bred in London, outdistanced six fantasy baseball experts and five other randomly selected fans from around the globe to win the first-ever Bloomberg Baseball Challenge a season long fantasy league that gave each of the players access to Bloomberg’s Fantasy Baseball tools. (Photo: Business Wire) Farrell defeated a panel of experts that included: Harold Reynolds, MLB Network Analyst; Ron Shandler, Founder of BaseballHQ.com; Lawr Michaels, Senior Content Manager for Mastersball.com; Tim Heaney, Managing Editor of KFFL.com; Steve Gardner, USA Today fantasy baseball columnist and Derek VanRiper, Baseball Editor of Rotowire.com. It was the first time Farrell, a self proclaimed “stats geek” who started seriously following baseball only three years ago had ever played fantasy baseball. “About three years ago an American tourist left a baseball magazine in my cab and I started looking at the numbers and became interested, and then I started watching on ESPN and I was hooked,” Farrell said. “I love stats, and although I have played fantasy sports in the UK like football and cricket, there was nothing like baseball, and the Bloomberg tools gave me a real chance to get deeply involved and see how I could do against some great American experts. I did my homework, made some educated guesses and away we went. I even put a wager on the Texas Rangers at 35-1 at the start of the year, so baseball has been very, very good to me.” Farrell, who played under the name “Winnings Pitched,” prided himself on listening to podcasts while driving his cab in London traffic and analyzing every stat possible while selecting players like the Padres’ Mat Latos, the Texas Rangers’ Colby Lewis and the Blue Jays’ Vernon Wells , and in picking up the Indians’ Carlos Santana before he made a Major League splash. He was followed in the standings by Martha Mitchell, a 54-year-old mother from Houston, Texas, while veteran Shandler of Baseball HQ finished third, and Gardner of USA Today finished fourth.
