Jose Mourinho Says It's Unlikely He'd Be Temporary Portugal Soccer Coach

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho says its unlikely he’ll coach the Portugal national soccer team on a temporary basis.

The Portuguese Football Federation wants Mourinho to take over for two European Championship qualifying matches next month as it searches for a replacement for the fired Carlos Queiroz.

“I have a duty to this club and therefore cannot say yes to the national team,” Mourinho said in quotes on Real Madrid’s website. “Neither can I easily say no because I am Portuguese and I have strong feelings towards the team. Real Madrid has every right to keep me here and I cannot go against their word.”

Quieroz was fired Sept. 10 after being suspended for six months by anti-doping authorities for distrupting a drug test. Portugal has a loss and a tie in its first two Euro 2012 qualifiers and plays Denmark on Oct. 8 and Iceland four days later.
