Lawmakers approved the appointment of Robert Chote as chairman of the U.K.’s independent fiscal watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility..
Chote, the director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, “is very well qualified professionally for the post, having demonstrated his independence of mind and expertise,” Treasury Committee Chairman Andrew Tyrie said in an e-mailed statement. “An OBR along the lines proposed in the committee’s Report, to be released next week, and led by Robert, has every prospect of adding to the quality of public debate on fiscal policy.”
The Treasury Committee, which has the power to veto OBR appontments, questioned Chote in a public evidence session earlier today. Chote replaces Alan Budd.
