Cambodia’s genocide tribunal has indicted four former senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge, including former head of state Khieu Samphan, the Associated Press reported.
Ieng Sary, former foreign minister and his wife, Ieng Thirith, ex-minister for social affairs, and Nuon Chea, the group’s ideologist, were also indicted, the news service said.
Each faces charges of crimes against humanity, genocide, murder and religious persecution for the period when the 1970s regime may have killed as many as 1.7 million people, AP said.
The trial, the second by the tribunal, is expected to start by the middle of next year, AP said.
