Johannesburg Earned $19.6 Million From Its Tri-Nations Game, I-Net Reports
Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city, earned $19.6 million from hosting a rugby match between the country’s national team and New Zealand’s All Blacks last month, I-Net Bridge reported, citing a MasterCard Inc. report.
That’s the largest amount earned by any city so far in this year’s Tri-Nation’s tournament, the southern hemisphere’s premier rugby competition, which features South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, the Johannesburg-based news agency reported. Even so, a forthcoming match between Australia and New Zealand scheduled for Sept. 11 in Sydney is expected to contribute $28 million to the city’s economy, I-Net Bridge said.
Earlier in the tournament, the Australian city of Melbourne earned $16 million from hosting a game between the country’s Wallabies rugby team and the All Blacks, while Brisbane gained $14 million when South Africa’s Springboks played Australia in the city, the news agency said.
South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, earned $9.2 million from a game between the Springboks and the Wallabies on Aug. 28, while Bloemfontein made $8.6 million for hosting a match between the two teams a week later, I-Net Bridge said.
