Aston Villa Names Gerard Houllier as Manager, Replacing Martin O'Neill

Aston Villa named former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier as coach, replacing Martin O’Neill.

Houllier will leave his job as technical director of the French soccer federation. He led Liverpool to the UEFA Cup, England’s F.A. Cup and League Cup in 2001, and also managed Lens, Paris St. Germain and Lyon. His appointment was announced on Villa’s website.

O’Neill quit Villa on Aug. 9 amid media reports of disagreements with American owner Randy Lerner. Kevin MacDonald is in charge on a caretaker basis.
