Aevum, BHP, Caltex, Goodman, Qantas, Rio, Telstra: Australia Stock Preview

The following is a list of companies whose shares may rise or fall in Australia. This preview includes news announced after markets closed yesterday. All prices are from yesteday’s close unless otherwise stated.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index futures contract due in September was little changed at 4,591 as of 11:59 p.m. in Sydney. The Bank of New York Australia ADR Index advanced 0.7 percent on Sept. 3. The S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 0.8 percent to 4,575.50.

Mining shares: Copper for delivery in three months added 0.8 percent to $7,709 a ton at 6:58 p.m. on the London Metal Exchange. Futures for delivery in December gained 0.5 percent to $3.518 a pound in New York.

BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP AU), the world’s largest mining company, gained 0.6 percent to A$38.55 in Sydney. Its American depositary receipts climbed 0.9 percent in New York trading on Sept. 3.

Rio Tinto Group (RIO AU), the world’s third-biggest miner, gained 1.6 percent to A$75 in Sydney.

Oil companies: Crude for October delivery fell 0.9 percent to $73.96 a barrel at 11:22 a.m. in New York. There was no floor trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange because of a U.S. holiday.

Caltex Australia Ltd. (CTX AU), the nation’s biggest oil refiner, climbed 2.8 percent to A$11.71.

Woodside Petroleum Ltd. (WPL AU), Australia’s second- largest oil and gas producer, rose 0.1 percent to A$43.40.

Aevum Ltd. (AVE AU) and Stockland (SGP AU): Stockland, Australia’s biggest housing developer, said it has identified a number of serious deficiencies in Aevum target’s statement and that it fails to reflect the true underlying performance of the business. Aevum, a retirement village operator, gained 2.1 percent to A$1.74. Stockland climbed 1.7 percent to A$4.15.

Goodman Group (GMG AU) and ING Industrial Fund (IIF AU): Investa Property Group and Goodman Group may face competition for the management rights to the A$3.2 billion ($2.9 billion) ING Industrial Fund, the Australian Financial Review reported in its Street Talk column. Goodman Group shares rose 0.8 percent to 67.5 Australian cents. ING Industrial Fund stocks were unchanged at 47.5 Australian cents.

Perpetual Ltd. (PPT AU): Geoff Lloyd is among those being considered as Perpetual’s chief executive officer, the Australian Financial Review reported in its Street Talk column, without saying where it got the information. Shareholders are expecting an announcement at next month’s annual meeting, the newspaper said. The stock advanced 1.1 percent to A$30.40.

Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN AU): British Airways Plc Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh said he would resume merger talks with Qantas if the Australian company was interested, the Australian Financial Review reported. There wasn’t “any evidence” that Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce wanted to pursue a deal at this stage, Walsh said in an interview with the newspaper. Shares in Qantas, Australia’s largest airline, fell 0.4 percent to A$2.52.

Telstra Corp. (TLS AU): Australia’s largest telephone company remains committed to investing in China after moving to sell its shareholding in property website SouFun Holdings Ltd., Chief Executive Officer David Thodey said. Telstra shares advanced 1.4 percent to A$2.86.
