English Schools Overcrowded, Need 25,000 New Places, Financial Times Says

English schools are confronted by an acute shortage of pupil places, with more than 10 percent of students attending schools with a high degree of overcrowding, the Financial Times reported.

The U.K. government will have to fund 25,000 new places in English primary schools over the next two years to prevent further overcrowding, the newspaper said, citing local- government estimates.

The Audit Commission defines a high degree of overcrowding as student numbers more than 4 percent above the capacity for which the school buildings were designed, according to the FT.
