Kovalchuk's Contract With Devils Agreed Upon by NHL, Union, Agent Says
The National Hockey League approved Ilya Kovalchuk’s latest contract with the New Jersey Devils, after rejecting a longer deal as a violation of the ceiling on payrolls, his agent said.
The NHL agreed to accept a 15-year, $100 million contract between the 27-year-old left wing and the team, said Jay Grossman of Puck Agency LLC. The deal will keep Kovalchuk under contract with the Devils until he is 42.
NHL spokesman Frank Brown said declined to comment.
On Aug. 9, arbitrator Richard Bloch upheld the league’s right to void a proposed 17-year, $102 million deal between the Devils and Kovalchuk because it circumvented the league’s salary cap.
A three-time All-Star, Kovalchuk recorded 27 points in 27 games after joining the Devils in February. Since being drafted first overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2001, Kovalchuk has scored 338 goals, more than anyone else in the league over that span.
The Devils had a regular-season record of 48-27-7 last season, second-best in the Eastern Conference. The team averaged two goals a game in the playoffs, falling to the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round.
