Hurricane Earl, once a powerful Category 4 storm, weakened today to a Category 1 system with top winds of 85 mph as it moved north along the Eastern Seaboard, the National Hurricane Center said at 11 a.m. Miami time. The hurricane warning area for Massachusetts was reduced, although the alert remains in effect for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island, the agency said.
