German Government, States Must Play Role in Sarrazin Dismissal, ARD Says

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government and the Bundesrat, parliament’s upper chamber that represents Germany’s 16 states, must get involved in any decision on the Bundesbank’s request to dismiss its board member Thilo Sarrazin, ARD television said, citing a law academic.

All bodies that played a role in Sarrazin’s appointment must also be involved in the board member’s dismissal, which is unprecedented and lacking procedures, Hans Herbert von Arnim, a law professor at the German University of Administrative Sciences in the city of Speyer, told ARD.

The federal government and the Bundesrat must file a joint official request for Sarrazin’s firing, he said.
