Croatian Minister Pledges to Complete Shipyard Sales, Meet EU Requirement
Croatia repeated a pledge to sell its subsidized shipyards to fulfill one of the “main” requirements for European Union membership.
Crown Investment, representing Austria’s A-tec, and Jadranska ulaganja and DIV of Croatia have offered to invest in the yards in Rijeka, Split and Trogir, respectively. Of Croatia’s six shipyards on the Adriatic coast, only one, Uljanik in Pula, is profitable.
“We’re on the right track to complete the privatization of the shipyards and fulfill one of the main criteria for EU membership, the one related to competition policy,” Economy Minister Djuro Popijac told the cabinet, according to a government statement published yesterday.
To complete accession talks this year and join the EU in 2012, the Balkan country has to clear court backlogs and continue to improve competition policies.
