Beckham Eyes Sept. 11 Return After Six-Month Absence With Achilles Injury
David Beckham said he’ll be ready to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sept. 11 against the Columbus Crew.
The 35-year-old former England soccer captain has been sidelined since he tore his left Achilles tendon while playing for AC Milan in Italy on March 14.
“The doctors’ original date was Oct. 1, but I always kind of said I want to be ready before then,” Beckham said on the Galaxy’s website. “I’ll be on the bench and hopefully I’ll get on the field for 15-20 minutes.”
The midfielder began training with his Major League Soccer club Aug. 11.
“It’s a bit difficult because when you don’t play in games that’s where you get the real fitness from,” Beckham said. “But I’m doing what I can in the gym and what I can on the field, just trying to get strength back in my leg.”
The Galaxy has won three of its past 10 games after winning 10 of its first 12 this season. The overall record of 13-5-2 puts Los Angeles three points ahead of Real Salt Lake in the MLS Western Conference and two points ahead of the Crew for the Supporters Shield, which goes to the team with the best regular- season record.
“There’s always going to be a point where you have a dip in form,” Beckham said. “It’s just about getting over this slump, then once we do that, hopefully we can go all the way.”
England coach Fabio Capello said last month that Beckham, who has appeared 115 times for his country, has no future in the national team while he is in charge.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player went to Milan during the MLS offseason in a bid to boost his chances of playing in a fourth World Cup.
