Acciona Starts Generation at $64 Million Biomass Power Plant in Spain

Acciona SA said it connected a 50 million-euro ($64 million) biomass plant to the electricity grid in Spain.

The 16-megawatt generator uses straw as fuel and is located in the Castilla y Leon region in central Spain, the company said today in an e-mailed statement.

The plant in Briviesca will burn about 102,000 tons a year of agricultural waste straw to produce some 128 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy, the company said. This is sufficient to power about 40,000 homes.

Acciona undertook the development, engineering and construction of the plant and will own and operate it. The Spanish construction and energy company has secured medium and long-term supply contracts with more than 100 local farmers and 38 local companies, Acciona said.

The plant has created 100 permanent jobs on top of the 300 created during the construction phase, the statement said. Ente Regional de la Energia, a local government-owned utility, owns 15 percent of the project.
