Netherlands Releases Two Men Suspected of Terrorism
The Netherlands released two men who were taken into custody upon their arrival at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport from the U.S. two days ago on suspicion they may have been involved in preparing a terrorist act.
Investigations in the U.S. and the Netherlands showed no evidence of such involvement, Martijn Boelhouwer, a spokesman for Dutch prosecutors, said in an e-mailed statement today.
“Now that there are no indications which support the initial allegations, there is no reason to detain the men longer and they are no longer seen as suspects,” Boelhouwer said.
One of the men’s checked bags aroused suspicion because it contained a mobile phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle and other phones and watches strapped together as well as several knives and at least one box-cutter, the officials said.
A failed attempt to blow up a U.S. airliner, bound for Detroit on Dec. 25, originated in Amsterdam.
