Sorgi was hurt during the Giants’ first preseason game against the New York Jets and wasn’t able to throw a football the past two weeks. He was placed on the injured reserve list today, making him ineligible to play this season, the Giants said in a news release.
Giants wide receiver Sinorice Moss will also sit out the National Football League season after surgery today to repair a sports hernia, while linebacker Adrian Tracy was put on injured reserve with ligament damage in his elbow. Tracy was a sixth- round draft pick.
Sorgi, 29, was signed by the Giants on March 9 after spending the past six seasons in Indianapolis as the backup to Manning’s older brother, Peyton. Sorgi also sustained a season- ending injury to his throwing shoulder in 2009 that he said is unrelated to his current problem, the team said.
Without Sorgi, the Giants’ backup quarterbacks are Rhett Bomar and Dominic Randolph, neither of whom has thrown a pass in an NFL regular-season game. David Carr, the Giants’ second- string quarterback last season, signed with the San Francisco 49ers during the offseason.
The Giants open the season on Sept. 12 against the Carolina Panthers.
