Michelle Wie Claims Second LPGA Tour Golf Title at Canadian Women's Open
Michelle Wie led from start to finish in winning her second LPGA Tour title by three shots at golf’s Canadian Women’s Open.
Wie, 20, pulled away from Jiyai Shin and held off challenges from a group that included defending champion Suzann Pettersen during yesterday’s final round at St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Wie received $337,500 and a celebratory champagne shower on the 18th green after collecting her second victory in 81 events since first playing on the LPGA Tour as a 12-year-old amateur in 2002. Her first LPGA win came nine months ago at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico.
“It’s been a long time since November, and it feels great,” said Wie, who had three top-10 finishes in 14 previous starts this season. “I feel like I haven’t been playing as well as I wanted the last couple of months, and this just really makes me more motivated.”
Wie led the tournament from the start, when she shot a first-round 7-under 65 that featured a hole-in-one.
After rounds of 69 and 72 left her tied for the 54-hole lead with Shin, Wie closed with a 70 yesterday to finish 12- under par, three better than Pettersen, Shin, Jee Young Lee and Kristy McPherson.
“This is a confidence booster,” Wie said. “Hopefully I’ll have a lot more.”
